How Red Seal Journeymen rock the CanWest hort show
CanWest is Western Canada’s premiere horticulture trade show which is why Foreshore Equipment will be there and why I, personally, will also attend. Here is what my plan looks like.

The venue in Abbotsford with tons of free parking.
Wednesday September 26, 2018
Urban Foresters Symposium, 9-3 pm. Four lectures and two out of the tree presenters have Ph.D.s. Lunch is included in the $200 fee. 5 CEUs.
As soon as the symposium is over, I head down to the trade floor to check out the Foreshore Equipment booth and test my skills at the plant ID contest booth. I’m hoping to make it 100% for the third year in a row.

Plant ID booth: come test yourself
Lectures:
New and Under-utilized street and landscape trees
This should be interesting. It’s always nice to learn about new tree species that can be planted in our zone.
Moisture stress in the landscape
This is also very topical considering Global Warming effects.
Trees on development sites
Professional practice: report writing
I thought this was a bit weak and then a buddy of mine asked me to write up an arborist’s report so he could proceed with tree work on one of his strata sites. Effective written communication is critical. This seminar might even help with my blog composition.
Thursday September 27, 2018
This is what my second day looks like:
8:30-10 am Beyond organic matter
Soil life is critical for healthy gardens and landscapes.
11-12:30 Woody plants for our climate
I’m hoping to learn about new species.
1:30-3:00 The less is more garden: big ideas for small gardens
Ideas! That’s what we all need.
Each seminar is worth 1.5 CEUs, $120 for all 3 seminars. The breaks in-between are long enough to explore the trade floor.
Are you coming?
This horticulture trade show is like early Christmas for me. I’m guaranteed to learn something new and I will earn 9.5 education credits toward my ISA arborist and Certified Landscape Technician certifications.
It’s also a great way to find out what’s new in the industry and mingle with other green professionals. There’s even a job board if you’re looking for change.
I suspect Foreshore Equipment will have some trade show deals so please stop by and look for the delicious STIHL candy.
